LBS Writing/Spelling

What is it?     What do you want to learn?

  Basic writing/spelling skills Levels 1through 5

Level 1

bullet

Prints alphabet in upper/lower case letters

bullet

Writes own first and last names

bullet

Writes simple but complete sentences

bullet

Uses phonics to spell unfamiliar words

bullet

Uses capitals to begin sentences and to differentiate certain words (e.g. I, days of the week, months)

Level 2
bullet

Completes forms requiring personal info beyond identifying info.(e.g. simple job application)

bullet

Writes answers to simple comprehension questions in sentence form

bullet

Writes a short, simple paragraph (opening sentence, body, closing sentence)

bullet

Writes a simple letter (date, greeting, body, closing)

bulletWrites legibly TM

Level 3

bullet

Produces a variety of writing forms – letters, memos, brief reports, and short accounts

bullet

Uses simple and compound sentences

bullet

Revises/edits work seeking feedback from others focusing on content, organization, and vocabulary appropriate to reader

bullet

Proofreads and corrects final drafts focusing on grammar, punctuation and spelling

bulletUses phonics, knowledge of word structure/meaning to spell accurately

Level 4

bullet

Produces pieces of writing using a variety of forms e.g. descriptive, narrative, expository compositions

bullet

Writes for various purposes – jot from notes from text, journal

bullet

Organizes info to convey a central idea using well linked paragraphs TM

bullet

Uses printing/cursive writing appropriately for purpose (e.g. forms-printing/letters to friends-cursive)

bullet

Correctly spells a wide range of commonly used words

Level 5
bullet

Writes for various purposes in a range of contexts (e.g. technical instructions, to clarify personal concerns, to explore social issues, to develop imaginative abilities

bullet

Uses a variety of sentence types and sentence structures with conscious attention to style

bullet

Revises, edits work focusing on content, and on complex elements of style, independently or using feedback from others
