What is it?       What do you want to learn?

Basic reading skills Levels 1 through 5

Level 1

Knows the alphabet

bullet

Randomly recognizes/pronounces letters of the alphabet and letter combinations

bullet

Knows the difference between consonants/vowels

bullet

Reads from repertoire of common sight words taken from everyday life

bullet

Uses alphabetical order

Level 2

bullet

Uses a variety of strategies to determine meaning of new words-context/syllabication or other recognizable units/dictionary/phonics

bullet

Understands that some sounds may be represented by different letters (find/phone)

bullet

Uses basic grammatical relationships to understand what is read (nouns/pronouns)

bullet

Uses punctuation to help understand what is read (e.g. apostrophe/quotation marks)

Level 3
bullet

Recognizes patterns of word structure

bullet

Identifies root words – uses them to determine meaning and pronunciation TM

bullet

Uses familiar vocabulary/context to determine meaning TM

bullet

Reads longer newspaper/magazine articles

bullet

Reads short novel

Level 4
bullet

Uses a variety of strategies to determine meaning of unfamiliar words; word analysis, word origins, dictionary

Uses generalizations about spelling to help pronounce words

bullet

Selects appropriate reading strategies – adjusts speed/takes notes/uses diagrams to organize

bullet

Reads from wide variety of fiction/non-fiction

bullet

Reads independently

Level 5

bullet

Decodes new vocabulary independently; applies full range of efficient reading techniques

bullet

Uses a variety of strategies to determine meaning of new words

bullet

Selects appropriate reading strategies-skims/scans/monitors own comprehension

bullet

Reads from variety of fiction/non-fiction for different purposes

bullet Focuses research using brainstorming, categorizing, focusing, library resources, skimming, jot notes, interviewing to complete research
