Basic math skills Levels 1 through 5

Level 1

Writes numbers 0 to 100

bullet

Counts by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s to 100

Understands that adding involves joining/subtraction involves taking apart

Adds/subtracts money to 10 cents

bullet

Names coins up to $2 – states value of 1, 5, 10 cents

Level 2
bullet

Reads/writes numbers to 1000

bullet

Counts by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 25’s, 100’s to 1000 using various starting points

bullet

Adds/subtracts 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping

bullet

Represents/explains ½, 1/3, ¼ as part of whole or set

bullet

Demonstrates relationships between coins/bills to $100

bullet

Makes purchases/change for money amounts to $10

Level 3

bullet

Recognizes/reads numbers from 0.01 to 100,000

bullet

Counts by 3’s, 4’s, 6’s, 7’s, 8’s, 9’s – 100 /Counts by 12’s to 144

bullet

Multiplies 2 digit number by a 2 digit number

bullet

Divides a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number

bullet

Relates a fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100 to a decimal

bullet

Makes purchases of/change for purchases up to $100

Level 4

bullet

Demonstrates an understanding of order of operations with brackets/can apply the order of operations in evaluating expressions involving whole numbers and decimals

bullet

Identifies/describes the characteristics of multiples and factors and prime and composite numbers

bullet

Relates fractions to decimals, percents, rates and ratios

bullet

Represents amounts of money under $100 using the smallest number of coins/bills

bullet

Reads/writes money values to $10,000

Level 5
bullet

Adds/subtracts rational numbers in any form (fractions, decimals, percents) applies to practical situations

bullet

Adds/subtracts simple fractions

bullet

Multiplies/divides simple fractions

bullet

Uses integers, ratio, rate, percents, powers, square roots appropriately/correctly in problem solving
