Bonnie Hallam

Silver and Gold Medal Winner, 2008 Special Olympics Athlete Extraordinaire.

 

Bonnie Hallam is 34 years old and has Down Syndrome. She lives at home with her parents, Barb and Bob. Before moving to Huntsville, Bonnie worked at a business called the Coffee Shed. She was considered a partner in the business. She helped make decisions on what to sell, selling price, etc. All the partners were special needs and had a job coach working with them. She was with the company for approximately 2 years.

In Huntsville, Bonnie volunteers at Huntsville Public School. On Monday’s, at the Breakfast Club and on Friday’s, at the drop in centre for preschool age children and their parents. She goes to the Community Living Office twice a month to wash toys for the Toy Library at Riverside Public School.
 

Bonnie started going to Muskoka Literacy in 2004.  She learns Math and English on Tuesday and also takes reading and writing every Thursday  with her tutor, Lucy. 

 

When Bonnie lived in Toronto she was involved with Special Olympics, participating in soccer, track and field, 5 pin bowling, and swam with 2 swim clubs.   

 

Bonnie joined the Rainbow Rollers (Special Olympics) 5 pin bowling team when her family moved to Huntsville in 2003. 

She qualified at a Region 6 bowling tournament to go to the Provincial games .  At these games she received a Silver medal for the team as well as a Gold medal for 187 Pins above her average and a Gold medal for getting High 6 Flat score of 717. 

 

Here in Muskoka she also swims with a Special Olympic team in Bracebridge and plays T Ball there in the summer. Bonnie has been involved with Special Olympics for 23 years.
