Muskoka Novel Marathon 2010

July 16 - 19 2010 Muskoka Novel Marathon 2010

Started 8:00 PM Friday evening     Finished 8:00 PM Monday evening

MUSKOKA NOVEL MARATHON 2010

On behalf of the students, staff and the Board of Directors of the Muskoka Literacy Council I want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those involved in the success of the Muskoka Novel Marathon 2010 held last weekend in Huntsville.

Paula Boon & Karen Wehrstein ably took over the job as co-convenors of this annual writing event where this year, twenty-eight writers spent 72 hours doing what feeds their collective soul. This was no mean feat considering Karen and Paula both spent 72 hours writing as well. Thanks to Melissa Gold who acted as “go-to” person during the event while Paula and Karen were otherwise engaged.

At the end of September, following the judging process, three writers will have their winning manuscripts sent to publishers for review. Thanks to Lorraine Alles for her work as registrar, treasurer and judge’s liaison. Thank you to Karen Cassian, Marilyn deLang, Nancy Fischer, Donna Gagnon, Joan Gemmill, Jennifer Gray, Rosemary McGuire Herman, Gerri Mar, Anne Smith and Kirsty Williamson for volunteering to act as judges, and to Marc Cote of Cormorant Books and Lobster Press for agreeing to read and review the winning manuscripts.

This event has always been enthusiastically supported by local businesses who donate food, Muskoka chairs, water, and tech services. Thanks to Holly Kelly at Kelly’s Home Furniture, and Ken Moser and Pat Murphy at Canadian Tire for donating Muskoka Chairs for prizes. Thanks to Manny Buttus at “That Little Place by the Lights”, Manish Patel at Subway on King William, Dave Veitch at Bulk Barn, Chris Hayes at Little Caesar’s, Maggie Rittenhouse at Robinson’s Your Independent Grocer and Ken Inglis at Springhill. Hard working writers require sustenance to do their best work. Thanks to Sharon Ledwith for coordinating these donations.

Thanks to Catherine Wyle at Coles who has generously offered to copy the submissions that will be distributed to the judges. Thank you Dawn Huddlestone, webmistress, for creating a wonderful website for the event (www.muskokanovelmarathon.com) Thanks to Lisa McWhirter at Vianet and Jim Brendish at Brendish Computers for setting up wireless internet for the writers.

A special thanks also to Nico Byl, Paula’s husband, and their son Oliver for cooking the delicious barbecue and salads meal for Sunday dinner. More thanks still to Nico, for extra last-minute services rendered.

Very special thanks and appreciation to the writers, without whose enthusiasm for writing this event would never have become as popular as it is. Not only do they spend 72 hours at their computers during a hot summer weekend, but they also poll neighbours and friends for pledges prior to the event. This year, writers raised more than $5,000 for the Muskoka Literacy Council, the highest amount in the last several years. As a result of the generosity of the community, operating costs are kept to a minimum, ensuring that all monies donated go directly to increasing services offered at the Muskoka Literacy Council. Marathoners have donated close to $40,000 over the past 9 years of this event.

The 2010 Muskoka Novel Marathon writers are: Martin Avery, Marty Avery, Susan Blakeney, Debra Bennett, Paula Boon, Vic Burton, Kevin Craig, Sheila Cook, Pat Flewwelling, Laura Heming, Dawn Huddlestone, Linda MacLean, Kat McNichol, Shirley Meier, Jacqui Morrison, Cathy Olliffe, Evelyn Pollock, Doug Pugh, Tahmina Reza, Bronwyn Russel, Kim Russel-Brooks, Rachel Sa, Amy Stuart, Erin Thomas, Karen Wehrstein, Shellie Yaworski and Collette Yvonne.

Thank you sincerely everyone for the part you played in making the whole event the success it was in 2010.
