Lunch with Roy MacGregor at Hillside Farm

August 1 2010,  Details below.

Roy MacGregor

COMMUNITY THANKS

What a treat it was to have lunch with Roy MacGregor at Jerrett’s Barn in Hillside last Sunday. It was apparent that Roy deservedly earned his Order of Canada citation in 2005 as being a gifted storyteller. During his talk not only did he make us all proud to be Canadian but also he told the amazing story of his friend Clarence Brazier, the almost 104 year old who learned to read at the tender age of 93. The event was a fundraiser for the Muskoka Literacy Council.

Sincere thanks to Roy for agreeing to speak to us during his holiday and to Joan, John and Jake Jerrett for providing the perfect ambiance and for being such gracious hosts for this special event.

Thanks especially to Heather Hunter for her wonderful idea that precipitated the planning and to Joan, Heather, and Anne Peters for preparing lunch for the almost 90 guests. Thanks to Shirley Hanes for tending the wine bar and to John Hanes, Michael Lowe, Sandy Peters and John Jerrett for doing the carting and hauling.

Thanks to Louise Parkinson, owner of The Bookcase, for selling Roy’s books at the event and for donating the proceeds to the Muskoka Literacy Council. Thanks as well to Sarah Spring for the lovely music .

Kudos and thanks again to Heather for convening the event and for organizing the many donations. Thanks to Keeley Schierl at the Dwight Market, to Darren Smith at the Lake of Bays Brewery, to Robinsons, Price Chopper and Metro for their gift certificates and, to Joan and John, and Heather and Eric Cunningham for their special donations. Thanks to everyone who attended, thereby supporting adult literacy programs at the Muskoka Literacy Council.

On behalf of the staff, students and board of directors of the Muskoka Literacy Council, my sincere thanks to all who had a part in making it the special afternoon that it was.

Susan Lowe
